DID NOSTRADAMUS PREDICT FRANCO?

    Over the years, many books have been published containing inaccurate interpretations of Nostradamus' works.  Many of these false interpretations were deliberately contrived to fit the events of the times, and achieve fame and fortune for the authors.  When these false predictions failed to come true, it was always Nostradamus who was blamed and discredited.  If Nostradamus was truly able to see the future, and was attempting to warn us about upcoming events, then it is indeed a tragedy that the world ignored his warnings.

     NOSTRADAMUS QUATRAIN #5-8

   There will be loosed instantaneous fire, death contained

   Sera laisse le feu vif, mort cache

   Q #5-8 No one thought Dresden would be bombed because it was a hospital city, and a European center for the arts and sciences.  But during a Mardi Gras celebration in 1945, the city fell victim to a saturation bombing with 60,000 incendiary bombs (1 for every 2 people in the city) and an additional 5 megatons of high explosives.  Unlike the victims of Hiroshima, who never knew what hit them, the citizens of Dresden were slowly incinerated as women ran screaming through the streets with their babies in their arms and their hair on fire as they burned to death.  Churchill's bombing of Dresden was the largest one day holocaust in the history of warfare.  The German people paid dearly for Hitler's decision to bomb London.

     NOSTRADAMUS QUATRAIN #5-12

   Near Lake Geneva they'll be led

   Aupres du lac Leman sera conduite

   And those of the Rhineland will come to invade.

   Et ceux du Rhin la viendront invahir.

   Q #5-12 In this quatrain Nostradamus tells us about the infamous German spy and prostitute, Mata Hari, who learned of French plans for the Battle of Somme while attending a party in Geneva.  She informed the Germans, who sent their forces from Augsburg to acheive the greatest one day slaughter of French soldiers in history.   The double agent Mata Hari was eventually tried and executed for her acts of espionage.

     NOSTRADAMUS QUATRAIN #5-20

   Beyond the Alps, the Grand Armee will pass,

   Dela les Alpes grand armee passera

   Q #5-20 Napoleon hatches an incredible plan to march his "Grand Armee" over the Italian Alps in late winter, a feat previously achieved only by the great Hannibal.  This incredible feat catches the Austrian army completely by surprise, and Napoleon becomes a great hero at the Battle of Marengo.  The "Grand Tuscan," Ferdinand of Austria, is forced to return to Vienna in disgrace.

     NOSTRADAMUS QUATRAIN #5-23

   The two participants will unite together,

   Les deux contens seront unis ensemble,

   When the greater part of the battle will be joined;

   Quand la pluspart a Mars seront conjoined;

   Q #5-23 The combined naval forces of the Libyan and Ottoman fleets under Ali Pasha are finally defeated by the more heavily armed forces of the Catholic League at the Battle of Lepanto in 1571.  This great naval battle marked the end of Ottoman dominance over the Mediterranean Sea.  The Great One (Chouluk Bey) of Africa and his band of pirates was finally put to flight.

   Q #5-28 Here Nostradamus describes the murder of the great Duke de Guise of Genoa.  After Henry III discovers that the Catholics have been poisoning his food, and orders the death of his Catholic rival for the French throne.  The Duke de Guise is invited to Blois and stabbed to death by three hired assassins.

     NOSTRADAMUS QUATRAIN #5-29

   Freedom shall not be recovered,

   La Liberte ne sera recouvree,

   They will be occupied by a dark, fierce, iniquitous villain;

   L'occupera noir fier vilain inique;

   By Hitler, and the Kingdom of Italy is a fascist republic.

   D'Hister, Venise faschee la republique.

   Q#5-29 This is another example of Nostradamus' famous wordplay on the name of Adolph Hitler.  Nostradamus here combines the two words, "Hitler" and "Ister", thus providing us with both Hitler's name and place of origin (Ister was the Latin name for the Danube).  Hitler and Mussolini would agree to turn Italy into a Facist Republic, thereby nullifying the power of the Pope.

     NOSTRADAMUS QUATRAIN #5-33

   The leaders of the city are rebelling,

   De principaux de cite rebellee,

   Who will greatly wish to recover their freedom;

   Qui tiendront fort pour liberte ravoir;

   Q#5-33 The Massacre at Wassey, France on March 1st, 1562 occurred when the Duke of Guise ordered his troops to break up a Protestant worship service being held in a barn in Wassey.  The Duke was struck by a rock thrown by one of the worshippers, and ordered his troops to cut down all the male members of the gathering.  When news of the massacre of 63 unarmed men reached Nantes, it helped to fuel the spirit of resistance that led to the French Wars of Religion.

     NOSTRADAMUS QUATRAIN #5-35

   Through the free city of the great Adriatic sea,

   Par cite franche de la grand mer Seline,

   That still caries the sustinence of Peter,

   Qui porte encores a l'estomac la pierre,

   Q#5-35 During the Napoleonic wars, the English and Russians had to deal with the threat of the French navy in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea.  While the English fleet was anchored in the North Adriatic Sea, the Ottomans made the mistake of attacking them.  The British quickly defeated the Ottomans and, as part of a peace agreement, made them agree to close off the Straits of the Dardenelles to the French fleet.

     NOSTRADAMUS QUATRAIN #5-38

   That great monarch who shall succeed (another) by death,

   Par nonchalance a tous concedera,

   Which in the end shall undermine the Salic law.

   Qu'a la parfin faudra la loy Salique.

   Q#5-38 In the long history of Europe, no monarch ever gave in to more excess than King Louis XVI of France.  Under his reign there was nothing that the king and his queen, Marie Antoinette, could not possess.  French royalty lived in the lap of luxury as the commoners starved to death.  The alleged "Let them eat cake!" remark by Marie Antoinette probably never took place, but it was representative of the feelings of the French people toward their monarchy.

     NOSTRADAMUS QUATRAIN #5-56

   After the passing of a very old pontiff,

   Par le trespas du tres vieillart pontif,

   Will be elected a Roman of good age;

   Sera esleu Romain de bon aage;

   Of whom it will be said that he weakens the see,

   Qu'il sera dict que le siege debisse,

   But he shall hold it long & rule harshly.

   Et long tiendra & de picquant ouvrage.

   Q#5-56 Pope Gregory XIII (Gregorian calendar) allowed too many liberal changes in the Church.  The Church hierarchy decided it was time to place a much more conservative person into the papacy. The new pope, Sixtus V, was a Bysantine, and as such completely swept out the liberals.  Sixtus V was the young friar that Nostradamus famously recognized as being a future pope.

     NOSTRADAMUS QUATRAIN #5-57

   There will be an adventure of Montgolfier & Aventin,

   Istra du Mont Gaulphier & Aventin,

   Who through a looking-glass will advise the army;

   Qui par trou avertira l'armee;

   Entering two stone churches, they will seize the bounty,

   Entree deux rocz, sera prins la butin,

   Of (Pope Pius) VI, the pius-one falling from power.

   Q#5-57 Nostradamus here describes the great hot air baloon adventure of Montgolfier and Aventin, who spied upon enemy movements during the Battle of Fleurus in Belgium on June 26, 1794.   The French army soon overran the Austrians and were able to sack the booty of the stone churches of Belgium and Holland, giving the antichrist Napoleon more money to finance his wars.  Pope Pius VI was arrested by Napoleon and died in custody.

     NOSTRADAMUS QUATRAIN #5-72

   To satisfy the immaculate edict,

   Pour le plaisir d'edict voluptueux,

   Venus sera en cours si vertueux,

   That it will defile the value of all law.

   Q #5-72 After the unexpected death of King Henry II of France in a jousting match in 1559, the Catholic Church declared the Count de Guise legal inheritor of the French throne, but after the people elected Henry's young son Francis II as king, the Catholics by (immaculate) papal edict, dispatched two Dominican friars to work in the royal kitchens and poison the king's food.  Francis II succumbed to poisoning at age 16, but no one suspected he'd been poisoned, since he was viewed as a sickly child.

     NOSTRADAMUS QUATRAIN #5-92

   After the holy-seat is held for 17 years,

   Apres le siege tenu dix sept ans,

   Five will change in like elapsed terms;

   Cinq changeront en tel revolu terme;

   Then will one be elected in similar times,

   Puis sera l'un esleu de mesme temps,

   To whom the Romans will not much conform.

   Q #5-92 In the blissful economic era of the 1920's, Pope Pius XI held his seat for 17 years (1922-1939).  Five more like revolving terms brings us to another prosperous time during the 1970's with the election of Pope John Paul II.  John Paul II was not Italian, and therefore not supported by his bishops, who often issued opinions that opposed his own.  Many Catholics were demanding rights to abortion, representation in the priesthood, and a host of other liberal changes in the Church, but John Paul II was a traditionalist, and refused to allow any changes in Church doctrine.
