Nostradamus
and Philip II

    Did Nostradamus predict the coming of King Philip II of Spain? Nostradamus sometimes used real names in his prophecies and this is one more example of that fact. Philip II of Spain was the most powerful king in Europe and shared his power only with the pope of Rome. The Protestant Reformation was causing problems in Philip's northern territories. The Protestants were joined by Dutch Jewish merchants from the Dutch East India Company who didn't want to pay taxes to Spain. King Philip was also trying to maintain his hold on Algeria, where the Muslims were also against Spanish rule.

     NOSTRADAMUS QUATRAIN #8 - 81

   The new empire in desolation,

   Le neuf empire en desolation,

   There'll be a change in the northern satellite;

   Sera change du pole aquilonaire;

   Those of Sicily shall create such a commotion,

   De la Sicile viendra l'esmotion,

   Troubling the enterprise of Philip's province.

   Troubler l'emprise a Philip tributaire.

   The above quatrain describes a rebellion taking place in Philip II's northern provinces. The third Duke of Alba had created a commotion in Holland trying to maintain military control of the area. Many Jews of the Dutch East India Company joined with Protestants who were trying to sever relations with Philip and the Catholic Church.

     NOSTRADAMUS QUATRAIN #9 - 89

   For seven years Philip's fortunes prosper,

   Sept ans sera Philip, fortune prospere,

   But will be reduced by Arab opposition;

   Rabaissera des Arabes l'effainct;

   Then a southern entanglement reverses the situation,

   Puis son midi perplex rebours affaire,

   A young upstart will undermine his authority.

   In 1830, King Louis-Philip of Spain took control of the French throne on the occasion of the capture of Algeria. But the Spanish king would meet strong opposition from a young Arab upstart named Abd al Qadir who would raise an Arab army and take control of southern Algeria. To settle the problem, Philip was forced to sign the Treaty of Tafna.

   Modern scientists and historians are unable to explain how Nostradamus was able to record these amazing predictions long before the events actually occurred.
