"Our Lady" of Fatima
In the year 1916, an event occurred in Europe that was destined to affect the lives of the world's Catholics for the next century. In the small town of Fatima, Portugal, three young children, 9-year old Lucia DeJesus, and her two younger cousins, Francisco and Hacinta Marto, ages 8 and 6 respectively, witnessed the appearance of a male angel who identified himself as the Guardian Angel of Portugal. This angel appeared to the children a total of three times, and asked the children to pray for more angelic appearances.
The three children, captivated by the appearance of this angel, dutifully prayed as the angel had asked, and the following year another angel appeared to them as they were tending their sheep in a field near their small village. The children described this second angel as a beautiful lady, who told them that the present war, World War I, would soon be over, but that a second and even more terrible war would occur in the future. The angel lamented to the children that the people of the Earth were not obeying God's laws, and therefore must suffer God's vengeance in the form of another worldwide war.
The first time the children witnessed the appearance of "Our Lady" was on May 13th, 1917, followed by a second apparition exactly a month later on June 13th. Word of these miraculous visions spread quickly, and when the 3 children visited the same field on July 13th, they were accompanied by nearly 5,000 curious onlookers. Local officials however, were becoming concerned about the large numbers of people flowing into the small town of Fatima, and in August the children were placed under arrest to prevent a public panic.
An August vision occurred anyway on the 19th of the month, followed by further apparitions on September 13th and October 13th. By the time of the October vision, the crowds had grown to more than 50,000 people. Many people reported seeing miraculous astronomical occurrences including the sun cavorting about in the sky, and various colors appearing in the heavens.
The angel imparted a total of three secrets to the children about future world events. The First Secret of "Our Lady" described the coming of the Second World War. The Second Secret predicted the future conversion of Russia from Communism. The mysterious Third Secret of Fatima was locked away in the vaults of the Vatican Library and not scheduled to be opened and read by the Pope until the year 1960. When Pope John XXIII finally opened and read the prophecy in 1960, he was so frightened by its contents that he refused to release it to the public, and the prophecy was placed back into the Vatican's vaults.
In May of the year 2000, the Catholic Church finally decided to release The Third Secret of Fatima from the Vatican vaults.
